It is very interesting to search through old copies of English Churchman and see the battle that was fought by our godly forefathers (some of whom are still with us!). It is not hard to see how the excuses that were made by the modernisers and liberalisers were indeed hoaxes and lies as our old friends said at the time. “Be sure your sin will find you out” Numbers 32:23.

We’d like to make old copies of EC available online. Please contact the Editor if you have any copies from the 19th or 20th Century.

    Dear Irvin,
Sorry not to have replied here earlier! I don’t have back issues from then but they are available in some large libraries such as Oxford, Cambridge, British Library and Newspaper Library.

We are thankful to have received two bound volumes of 1846 and 1847. We just need the time to copy them. Meanwhile we hope to use a few of the old articles in English Churchman from time to time. There is much fascinating material there for researchers. Anyone interested in helping?

  • John Birch:

I hope that somebody can help me.
I am researching the writings and life of Emily Sarah Holt (1836-1893), a protestant historical novelist, who published around 50 historical novels, various books of poetry, essays and articles. Most of her earlier novels were published through John F. Shaw & Co. in London, however, from 1884, the English Churchman became her publisher, until her death and beyond.
I would like to see any relevant content within the English Churchman, but also any insight from the publisher themselves would be appreciated.
I have available to me personal items related to Miss Holt, obtained both from various other researchers (UK- & US-based), and also from descendants of the writer and her family.

Interesting. Other than going to a library and trawling through backissues of EC, I cannot think how to help. I was not aware of English Churchman being a ‘publisher’ of anything other than this newspaper.
